Making it Stick - Preparing Solid Weight Loss Resolutions for 2007

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Jeff Cadwell Remember last year at this time? You set your new goals. You even wrote them down. You started with the best intentions. But your best weight loss objectives were neglected before the holiday decorations were even put away. What happened? Was there a bump in the road or did you just throw in the towel because it was too hard and you talked yourself out of it? If you want a chance to make your 2007 resolutions stick, it is time to come to terms with how resolutions get pushed aside and what you can do about it. Top Resolution Breakers 1. Your goal is unrealistic. Example: I will lose 25 pounds by January 30. Flawed Method: It is impractical to think you will able to lose that much weight so quickly and then to even fathom keeping it off and still remaining healthy. It is just not realistic. Even if you did, it would all be water weight and more importantly, you are going to be losing lean muscle mass. Realistic Objectives: Set intentions that are sensible and reachable. Understand that losing a little less than a pound per week is healthier and practical for long-term results. Give yourself a fighting chance! Its not the time frame that matters. Its your health and well-being that are most important. The most significant thing is that you are moving forward and progressing toward your long-term goal. 2. You do not give yourself a chance to hit a bump in the road and you have no support system to get back on track. Example: I will not eat sugary foods. No ifs, ands or buts. Flawed Method: Great idea, but who can live like that? The most unrealistic frame of mind is thinking that you are super human. All it does is set you up for failure. If you were to have a slip, you would go into the all too familiar negative self-talk of telling yourself that you are a complete failure and that you are just not worth it. Realistic Objectives: Set a safety date on your calendar for creating a plan of action with a safety friend, life coach or buddy who understands your challenges. In those cases where there might be weakness and/or emotions that cause you to go to food for solace, it is always comforting to know you have a safe place to fall and strategize to get back on target. You might also think about creating a Plan B for yourself (e.g. take a walk until the temptation fades away). This way you can get back on track immediately. Just remember, most people who are successful at losing weight take it one step at a time. They begin by choosing moderation rather than abstinence and they always have back-up strategies. 3. You have too many resolutions or goals. Example: By the end of January, I will lose 15 pounds, give up eating sweets, start going to the gym, (and the list goes on) Flawed Method:Too many goals at once stretch every priority too thin. Having too many goals is as bad as having no goals at all. Treating everything as important makes nothing important. Realistic Objectives: Only a limited number of goals can be pursued at the same time. Pick your priorities. Write out an action plan that you can refer to. Take on one thing at a time, and remember that this is a New Years resolution, so you have 12 months to develop this new healthier lifestyle. Chart out each goal, and then commit to starting each new endeavor month to month. For instance, you might plan to join a gym in January; in February you want to join a weight loss support group, etc. Set a start and check-up date for each goal so that you can track your progress. The key is to commit to writing down your objectives and then either holding yourself accountable or asking for assistance in the process (life coach, buddy, etc.). 4. The resolution has no specific outcome. Example: I will join the gym sometime this year. Flawed Method: So you are intending on exercising at a gym. But is this today, tomorrow, or in December of 2007, when your actual goal is to lose the weight as soon as possible? Realistic Objectives: How many pounds do you want to lose? How much is it going to cost you monthly for a gym membership? Is there still money left over for leisure activities and unexpected expenses (health issues, car problems, etc.)? A winning action plan outlines what to do, when to do it and how to assess it. For example, you can weigh yourself weekly, reviewing if you are on target or if your current nutritional and exercise plans are working toward your resolution. It then gives you a chance to make changes accordingly. 5. Someone else made your resolutions for you. Example: I will reduce my waist size four inches by April (subtext: because my significant other wants me to wear the style of clothing that I wore when we first met.) Flawed Method: If someone else has their own intentions for you, there will not be a need for self-empowerment. You will wind up becoming resentful and irritated at the resolution itself, if not at that someone who set you up in this self-deprecating situation. Realistic Objectives: A New Year’s Resolution must be an empowering place because it is something you personally have thought about, planned and pursued in your own time and space. The outcome of the resolution itself must have a deep and important meaning to you. It must be valid enough for you to set your mind toward doing it. If you have a case where you would like to meet both partner’s needs, it is critical not to push one partner into an uninvited activity that gratifies the other. New Years Resolutions can become a jumping off place for many, by altering areas in their life that require self-improvement. However, it can also be a time of struggle, depression and internal conflict. You can protect yourself and increase your chances for success by considering the above steps in advance of preparing your personal resolutions. By Zenith Regan A person who is concentrating on weight loss, focus more on losing weight and ignore the importance of eating. Actually, irrespective of people who are obese, overweight or normal, most of us are not clear about the idea of normal eating. In this article, let us know how much we know about right eating habit. There are questions given below, please analyze and answer according to your understanding. 1. Is it normal to eat just when you feel hungry and eat without stopping till you feel satisfied? Yes/No 2. People should prefer their personal likes and dislikes while making their healthy food chart. Yes/No 3. Restricted daily calorie intake and exercise is important for weight loss. Yes/No 4. It is not normal to eat for any reason other than providing bodys nutrition requirements. Yes/No 5. Food is mainly divided into two categories: Good and Bad. Yes/No 6. When one controls calorie intake for weight loss, it is normal to feel hungry all the time. Yes/No Now, please take your time and answer the questions. The correct answers are given below; you can match the answers to know the depth of your understanding about normal eating. Answers: 1. Yes: Every normal human being has a biochemical system to regulate hunger. Poor impulse control and emotional eating are the problems in which the biochemical system looses contact with the brain. 2. Yes: The instinct to choose food according to your taste indirectly is connected to the nutritional requirement which is unique to every body. 3. No: Daily calorie intake control is a way to monitor how much you are eating. But a continuous deficit of calorie will not be helpful if you do not take care of your nutrition requirements. 4. No: It is normal for you to eat for other reasons like taste, to combat stress and depression. Food is associated with deep social and spiritual meanings. 5. No: There is nothing like good and bad in food because our body can use certain percentage of all types of nutrients. Normal eating does not mean inflexible rules. It means striking a balance between your taste and meeting health requirements. 6. No: Calorie intake monitoring does not mean you should feel hungry all the time. If you are experiencing chronic hunger, that means you are taking less food than required for a healthy body. If you are eating normally, you should feel hungry after every 4 hours. Based on your new understanding about normal eating, you should plan your food chart for weight management and weight loss for a beautiful body and healthy life. Women as Catholic Priests: The Time for Change is Now

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Stella Ramsaroop In ancient Rome, the cradle of democracy, women had no rights. Their place was in the home under the custody and control of the master of the house, which would often be the husband or father. Her job was to take care of the house and family. She had no vote, could not govern, nor even conduct her own affairs without the oversight of a man. These are actions viewed as crude and uncivilized by todays standards. However, even during these primitive times of democracy women were still allowed to be priestesses in Rome. The Vestal Virgins were honored and revered by men and women alike for their years of sacrifice and service to the Goddess Vesta. So how is it that over two thousand years later, the Catholic Church still refuses to ordain women for service in the Church as priests? Admittedly, it has been only very recently that most of humanity has decided to allow women the privilege of being acknowledge as an equal with men. In fact, it is only within the last century that American women have been allowed to vote or hold a political position. However, during this time womens rights have made significant advances. Women now work outside the house, hold political office even at a national level, have ready access to equal education, and yes, they even conduct religious services in many religions. Even Jewish congregations have women serving as rabbis. In fact, a woman was recently selected to replace the retiring male rabbi of a conservative congregation with over 500 families. This is a first for Conservative Judaism, which ordained its first female rabbi in 1985. I have the utmost respect for Scripture and its importance in society, so I do recognize the passage from the Apostle Paul requiring women to be silent in churches and saying it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in church. Paul instructs the women to wait till they get home to ask their husbands any questions they may have about the service. (1 Corinthians 14:33-35) Having acknowledged the importance of Scripture, my reverence for the Bible, and my knowledge of Pauls teaching; I now admit that I vehemently disagree with the sexism of this passage. I think it is important to recognize the culture from which Paul is speaking. In fact, Paul was a Roman citizen. He was raised in the type of backward culture we have already acknowledged as crude and uncivilized by todays standards and his remarks on this subject are no doubt a result of his cultural upbringing. The Church has always accommodated change as humanity has grown and matured. Even Pope John Paul II, who passed this week, met with the leaders of countries who were far from Christian. He met with Islamic leaders, Jewish leaders, and even rock stars like Bono from U2. These are all people the Church would have condemned or even burned at the stake for their heretical beliefs or ungodly actions during The Middle Ages. Likewise, it is time for the Catholic Church to mature to the level of accepting that women are equally viable as a candidate for priesthood as men. The times of believing women are on a lesser plane - whether intellectually, socially, or spiritually are long over and the Vatican would do well to acknowledge this fact. The Churchs churlish remarks on women serving in the role of a priest are dated and a clear demonstration of the need for a more progressive Pope that will be more responsive to the changing times and to the disenfranchised women of the Catholic Church, whose ministerial participation has dropped significantly over the last few decades. I pray the soul of Pope John Paul II finds peace and comfort in the Kingdom of Heaven. He deserves so much for his sacrifice and service to the Church and to God, I also pray the next Pope will override John Paul IIs remarks on women in the priesthood and allow the Church step into the 21st century. If this happens, perhaps one day we will have a female Pope. Now that would be something to praise God about. The Best And Most Efficient Way To Carry Worms While River Fishing

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Trevor Kugler One of the biggest problems that we as river and stream fishermen face is how to efficiently carry a container of worms with us on our next fishing trip. If you are anything like me a river fishing trip can cover a couple of miles of river and involve crossing said river three to ten times. I carry my spinners, spoons, split-shot, pliers, and hooks in my fishing vest. So all of my fishing equipment is easily accessible, and ready to go. I used to have a problem with where to carry a couple of containers of worms. I would just put them in my vest and go from there. But then I ran into the problem of them getting hot and dieing, and not to mention the fact that it was a complete pain in the rear-end to access them. It just wasn’t efficient at all. It got to the point that I wouldn’t even use worms because it was such a fiasco to take them with me and use them. Then I met my fishing mentor and he was doing something that I saw as ingenious! It was one of the simplest and most effective things that I had ever seen. He had taken an old sock from his sock drawer, and cut the end where your foot goes off. This created a little “bag” of sorts. This “bag” was then attached with a safety pin to your vest. Well, this little “bag” fit a container of worms in it perfectly. You would simply take the worms out of the container and put them into the sock bag. When it got too hot outside, you simply dipped the sock full of worms into the cool water, and they were good to go. And believe it or not, the worms don’t crawl out! They all just stay in a ball in the bottom of the bag, waiting to be used as your next piece of live bait. It’s true; I’ve been using this method for more than 20 years and have never had the little buggers crawl out. This method also helps with the problem of Styrofoam worm containers being left along a stream or river. Since you’re taking the worms out of the container before you are actually fishing, the container waits at your vehicle, not on the river. This is another wonderful aspect of this kind of carrier….no pollution. So there you have it. Make your own sock bag in order to carry your worms or power bait or whatever, or go somewhere like JRWfishing.com and purchase one that’s much cooler looking a bit larger than a sock hanging from your vest or shirt. Either way, the important thing is to take advantage of this little jewel of information. I promise you, if you implement this idea into your next river fishing trip, you will not be disappointed. It’s one of the most convenient ideas that I’ve ever come across. Rhode Island Gift Basket Ideas

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Wendy Wood As you brainstorm for gift baskets ideas to create a Rhode Island-themed arrangement, you will need to find elements that showcase the New England-region beauty and pride of the smallest state located in the United States. Historically, the state is the first of the 13 Original colonies to declare its independence from British control, which ultimately led to the beginning of the American Revolution. Ironically, Rhode Island would become the last of the original colonies to ratify the Constitution. Although the name suggests otherwise, the state is situated on the mainland with a few locations comprised of islands. Notable towns to keep in mind when creating baskets include Middletown, Newport, and Portsmouth. Historically, a nautical-themed gift basket can alert locals and tourists to the exploits of the famous Italian navigator, Giovanni da Verrazzano, who became the first European to visit any part of what later became the state of Rhode Island. Inside, an assortment of Italian meats, cheeses, and snacks should be included. Rhode Island is a rather large per capita consumer of coffee and in Providence, the area is considered to feature the highest number of coffee and doughnut shops per capita throughout the country. The state is also home to more than 100 Dunkin’ Donuts locations. With special attention paid to the beverage, small gift baskets filled with flavored creamers and sugars make the perfect compliment to the savory blends offered in Rhode Island. Gift baskets introducing the official state drink to tourists should be a hit. In Rhode Island, coffee milk is a popular treat, which is made by mixing milk with coffee syrup. This unique beverage was invented in the state, which has been bottled and sold in most grocery stores for years. The tasty delicacy has even has found a place in some of the cafeterias throughout Rhode Island schools. The state flower of Rhode Island is the violet, which provides a beautiful color scheme and theme for get-well gift baskets showered in splashes of lavender, lilac, and purple. A gift basket offering the tools and seeds to allow consumers to prepare their own gardens of violet may strike a chord with beginner gardeners. In the area, well-known colleges and universities are scattered about the state of Rhode Island. When decorating a line of higher learning gift baskets, dont forget to keep in mind the colors and mascots associated with Brown University (seal brown, cardinal red, and white; brown bears) and Providence College (black and white with silver accents; friars), which will attract the masses of families visiting the area looking for care package ideas and graduation gestures. Wound Healing: Bed Sores, Lesions, Pressure Sores, Ulcers - Treatment Intuition & Energy Healing

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Brent Atwater Bed sores, lesions, pressure sores, chronic wounds, ulcers and abscesses are nasty looking, a real problem to deal with, and at times quite painful for their owner. Wound management is a traditional medical specialty unto itself. Integrative healing (CAM) modalities and techniques are now being researched in clinical trials to assist and amplify traditional care. There are many reasons for non-healing wounds, some are the result of medical conditions. Many diabetics fear and eventually undergo surgical amputation. Bed ridden patients in nursing home or assisted living facilities develop bed sores that can facilitate their demise. Paraplegics and quadriplegics develop localized pressure sores that can instigate life-threatening infections. Situations that impede circulation such as complications following surgery, congestive heart failure, rheumatoid arthritis, peripheral ulcers, vascular disease, and traumatic injury help cause wounds. Additionally edema, systemic problems and infection impair normal healing. Most wound programs combine traditional medical and surgical care in addition to advanced wound care technologies including but not limited to dressing materials of bioengineered tissue and hyperbaric medicine. Alternative and integrative medicine processes and treatments offer a different approach. While initially evaluating a wound, as a medical intuitive and “human MRI”, I look at the 360 degree view of the traumatized area. Failing to “see” the entire wound and all contributing factors can sabotage healing. Assess the physical body’s systems and the energy systems that contribute to the current wound. Start your intuitive examination from the inner core and work your way out to the surface area of the open wound. Example- Start with the molecular structure of each cell, then the cellular clusters, and finally tissue groups. Next evaluate the infection and blood counts, the blood supply to the deteriorated area, and the blood’s oxygen delivery to that wound. Investigate the functions the wounded area contributes to the body and the body’s entire immune system, and the immune systems response to the wound area. Last but not least, evaluate the client’s mental, emotional and spiritual states that affect and effect the entire body. Also address and correct the environmental factors such as lack of individual care or attention. Remove medications that hinder healing. Check with your physician about the interactions of various prescriptions. Clients that smoke should be required to stop during wound rehabilitation. To begin healing the wound, as an integrative medical specialist, I use distant energy healing in addition to and during the physician’s treatment and procedures to reorganize the molecular structure of each damaged cell. First I direct electromagnetic energy to the molecules of the cells. This stimulates the cells to restructure themselves and to regenerate healthy new cells. This concept is calledreturning to the original healthy cellular blueprint. One of the originator’s of this concept was Dr. RObert Becker in his book “The Body Electric”. He also established the fact that when stimulated with electromagnetic energy, a cell would regenerate. Then the blood cells must be directed to remove toxins and to reestablish healthy blood counts. This process will eventually remove infection in the wound. Repairing the damaged vascular system is next. The broken vessels must be sealed to prevent excess bleeding, weepage and further contamination and infection. Once accomplished, a healthy blood flow must be established to nourish and support regenerating cells and to implement oxygenation to the area. Since inadequate oxygen supply to the damaged tissue impedes healing, focus the energy on raising the oxygen levels of the client. This will support the repairing cells and help develop and rebuild a healthy tissue network. In traditional medicine, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one of the newest technologies to aid wound care. This therapy increases the level of oxygen delivered to the tissues and augments wound-healing repair. For the immune system to stabilize and contribute to health, direct the energy healing to amplify the immune system’s work on the entire body and on the wound area, two separate issues. Now that you have built a healthy foundation in the core of the wound, work on the tissue areas and the outer edges of the wound in increments. This reduces the size of the open wound, adds healthy supportive periphery tissue around the traumatized and damaged area, and provides clinical evidence that the wound is reducing. You do not want to knit together and seal over a wound that is not healed at its base, that mistake could exacerbate further deterioration. It’s best to approach wound healing in an organized fashion; system-by-system, inch by healed inch, from the inner core to the outside. Trying to heal the entire wound all at once puts too much stress on the body’s energy system and the cellular recalibration, and usually misses important ingredients in the entire healing recipe. It is also important to work intermittently on the wound, so the body will not be overstressed, and each system can reestablish itself independent of the others. This plan will manifest a stronger and more rapid healing response, have less periodic reversals, and maintain the integretity of the healed area. Although addressing physical problems is a major concern, I believe involving patients in their treatment with positive mind over matter actions, attitudes and affirmations is imperative. In deciding right now, this very minute, to address and make positive free will choices to change your mind’s attitude about your wound care, and to command your cells to assist in your healing, immediately helps facilitate the healing process. Patient contribution to their own care adds the mind over matter i.e. biofeedback dimension to the healing process and is crucial to long-term improvements. A favorite alternative medicine for your mind is the book “Positive Attitudes, Actions, and Affirmations for Overcoming Your Health Challenges”. The self-help section of your local bookstore has many helpful holistic mind body resources. It has been proven that positive attitude creates a greater immune system response that in turn helps diminish symptoms. It stands to reason that premise should also hold true in wound management. It’s the old adage of YOUR mind over YOUR matter. Your cells are here to house your life force energy called your Soul. You are the commander of your cells, i.e. your body, and YOU are the superintendent of your building i.e. your body, so how you handle your maintenance is all part of the healing journey. Having a “can do” attitude directs your cellular structure to do just that, assist in healing itself. Holistic health care is complementary to traditional medicine. Alternative medicine-medical intuition and distant healing integrates with and can be used during allopathic procedures and treatments. The combination of all types of healing modalities, technologies and whole body therapies gives the patient more healing options and a sense of participation and control over their healing, resulting in a better quality of life and sense of well being, thereby providing the most rewarding and effective healing journey. New Thanksgiving Traditions- So You Can Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Meri Raffetto The holidays are a special time to bring family and friends together to celebrate by giving and being thankful. Although there are many unique traditions among families, the most common tradition is the Thanksgiving meal. There are many ways to add health to your thanksgiving meal and several tips to help you decrease calories but Im not going to talk about that here. The reason is because most people dont want to tamper with their Thanksgiving recipes especially those recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation. In order to really utilize the principles of eating in moderation we should be able to enjoy these wonderful family recipes (I look at them as family food heirlooms) without changing them to save some calories. I know, I know, you cant believe I am writing this but I do believe there is another way. Instead of changing up your recipes opt for changing your other traditions on this festive day by adding a little activity. This activity can take place before your meal or after, either way you will burn more calories and get your metabolism burning at a higher rate for part of the day. Here are some suggestions of how to incorporate some movement so you can work off some of those extra calories during the day and not have to give up your favorite Thanksgiving fair. 1. Start the tradition of a family touch football game. I have to admit this idea came to me after seeing an episode of the television show Friends where the gang played a funny and competitive game of football on Thanksgiving. Playing a game of touch football is a wonderful tradition to start that everyone in the family can enjoy and becomes a family tradition your kids will continue to pass on with their families. Its your familyyou dont have to be good or even know how to throw the football, just have fun! 2. Take a walk. You can go for a group walk or go solo at any time of the day. When I lived in Santa Barbara, CA I loved watching the early morning joggers and walkers down by the beach on Thanksgiving morning. Its such a refreshing way to start off your day. It is also one of the only times the cooks of the household can get in their activity. Get off to a good start by taking a morning walk or going for a walk after your festivities. 3. Family bike ride anyone? If you live in a warmer climate taking a morning or afternoon bike ride with the family is another great way to go. Few people are out and about on Thanksgiving so youll have all of your favorite sites to yourselves! The goal here is to find a fun activity that you and your family can participate in and most important make it a ritual so your kids can pass it on to their families. Thanksgiving comes once a year so enjoy but try to burn some of those extra calories, and get back into your healthy eating habits the next day. Lastly, when you eat your favorite thanksgiving foods, try not to over-indulge. Eat until you are comfortably full and dont eat more just because its there. This is the key to celebrating thanksgiving with the foods you love and sticking with your health and weight management goals. Enjoy, celebrate, and be healthy! The Benefits of a Memory Foam Mattress

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Thomas Jay Wacker On the quest for a more productive day, research has shown that a more productive sleep at night can be one of the healthiest solutions. A Memory Foam Mattress could be just what researchers have been looking for. Concentration, Observation and even Creativity, are all qualities that can help us on our everyday journey through work, and life. The key is relaxation. Any quality that enhances our daily productivity is welcome, but with a calm mind and rested body, do we find the most precious resources, that is, through our sleep. Sleep provides us with an infinite number of possibilities. Possibilities, which are most efficiently cultivated, while having deep restful dreams in a peaceful bed. And mattresses made from memory foam are ideal in this respect. Ever since the invention of the first electroencephalogram, the machine that registers brain waves, back in the first part of the 20th century, scientists have known that sleep is not just an unproductive time in which we are forced to stop working. Wonderful things occur at night while we sleep. During an average night of sleep of eight hours, our bodies move in and out of consciousness through cycles, determined by brain wave activity. If these cycles are disrupted by stressing muscles in certain points, the sleeper, could actually wake up without fulfilling the full sleep cycle. This means time and relaxation, are needed to achieve the proper depths of a good nights rest. Suppose an average sleeper, gets eight hours of sleep, on a good mattress. Then she or he, would plunge into the realm of sleep for about 90min. then slowly come back out, and on return to the waking world, would have about 10 min. of dreams, almost wake up, roll over, and plunge back into another 90min. cycle. If the conditions are good, such as in using the proper kind of bed, the second sleep cycle will have something like 20-30min. of dreams, followed by 45-60min. in the third cycle. The longer we sleep, the more dreams we have. Maybe, not everyone remembers what they dream, all the time, everyday, but that doesnt matter, as much as the fact that dreaming is, in and of itself the place where we let our worry and stress of the day to day go free, preparing, for the day to come. If we dont value our sleep enough, we carry all that stress and anxiety from the day before, into our morning, and consecutively throughout the day, until we finally sleep again, to give our dreams another chance at freeing themselves. In a stressful modern day to day, race for time and money like ours, its a wonder why we dont value our sleep more. Sleep requires relaxation, and that means sleeping a good night’s sleep. Pressure on muscles must be evenly distributed throughout the body in a way that keeps our bodies fully relaxed. That means keeping the joints well accommodated. Memory foam does this in a very natural and relaxing way. When the body heat hits the mattress, it allows the foam to conform to the body reducing all that tension on the pressure points. No pressure points, no stress, no stress, means getting that good nights sleep that we need so badly to be more productive and happy individuals. Mattresses made from memory foam keep the load properly supported, so that no one point is favored over any other. Relaxation is the road to a good nights sleep. And memory foam can help the sleeper achieve the ideal nights rest. While getting tensionless, deep and well relaxed sleep, the individual can produce more and feel great doing it. The money paid to these helpers is far less than commissions paid to individual agents and it reflects itself normally in the ultimate rates. The other advantage in buying online is the carriers are able to keep their acquisition and marketing costs down thereby keeping rate increase to an absolute minimum. Most rate increases are due to the ongoing increased costs of the health benefits provided which are not controlled by the insurance companies.
